Work for a group exhibition, 2015

This series of paper sculptures concentrating on formal properties – shape, scale, materiality, etc – was created for the group exhibition, The Internet is a Cultural Object, at Brunswick Street Gallery, Melbourne, in 2015.

I was inspired by my growing need to escape from a world of sensory overload. At a time when we are bombarded with more information than ever before, with the internet and social media infiltrating all parts of our lives to feed us data at every turn, I wanted to determine if there is space for art that tells us very little.

For this body of work, I chose particularly emotive or directive news headlines found on the internet as the titles of my work. Applying these titles to Formalist, non-objective pieces, completely devoid of prescribed emotion or direction, negates the potential power of each headline and, in turn, the power that the internet can have over us.
